Boss says new players needed to bolster squad
Steve Davis has told crewealex.net that he felt he had to re-enter the loan market to strengthen his attacking options with the purchases of Tom Hitchcock and ‘Mesca’ because Crewe have been struggling for goals all season.
Following his late header at Carlisle on Tuesday night, defender Harry Davis is now the club’s leading goal scorer on three goals and although there is a cluster of players with two goals, Davis has been eager to land a goal poacher over the last few weeks.
He has taken his loan count to five and says that the reinforcements were essential to improve our chances of getting out of the bottom four.
Steve told crewealex.net: “I spoke to John (Bowler) and the board and they were very supportive again. I am always grateful that they come out and support us in what we try and do.
“I think we needed players to bolster the team and perhaps give the others in the squad a lift by improving the competition for places.
“The players we have in the group cannot disagree that they have had ample opportunity to stake their claim for a regular place in the side. Some of them have fallen below the standard we require of them and we can either work with them constantly and hope they come good or we can do something about it.
“We have tried to change things around by getting new players in. We hope they will come in and help us and have the impact we are looking for, whilst also giving others in the squad a boost as well.
He added: “We have a week’s break coming up before we are out of the FA Cup and that will be a valuable time for us. It will give us a bit of a mini pre-season and we can step away and assess things and where we want to go.”
