Davis Shows Faith In Youngsters

25 November 2013

Steve says if they are good enoguh and can handle pressure they will continue to play

Steve Davis says he is not afraid to turn to his young players if they can show the right temperament in adversity. Despite the club’s current position in the bottom four, the Crewe Alexandra boss says he can continue to rely on the likes of winger Ryan Colclough, the on-loan George Evans, Chuks Aneke, full-backs Kelvin Mellor and Jon Guthrie.

He may also hand more opportunities to the likes of Liam Nolan and the untried Billy Waters if they can prove that they are worthy of a run in the side.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “You have to be patient with the younger players but if they are doing well then they play. That has always been the case at this club. It is what Crewe are all about and that will be the case regardless of the situation.

“If we think they are good enough and can handle it then we play them. The younger ones get a chance here and they know that coming through the Academy.

“In many ways they are having to show that character and fight that is perhaps not associated with players of that age, but if they can cope with it and are fighting there alongside the rest of us then they will get a chance.”
