Davis believes Bees should have won promotion last season

Steve Davis believes Brentford were unlucky not to be promoted last season after he described them as ‘the best side we faced’.

Brentford completed the double over the Alex, winning 5-1 at Griffin Park in August and then winning 2-1 at Gresty Road a few days after we lifted the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley.

Brentford narrowly missed out on automatic promotion and then couldn’t recover from that disappointment to overcome Yeovil in the Wembley play-off final.

Steve Davis expects the Bees to be there or thereabouts this season again: “Brentford have a strong squad and Uwe (Rosler) has added some extra quality as well in the summer, when signing players like Will Grigg from Walsall.

“In my opinion they should have got out of the league last season. I thought they were the best team we played last season but they just slipped up in the play-offs.

“So they already had a good squad and have now added to that. It has taken them a bit of time to gel and get going but I think they will be there or thereabouts again.

“I am sure they will be a much better frame of mind after going through the experience of last season and we know it is going to be a difficult game for us. Last season, we suffered a heavy defeat there but it got us going a bit because it was a reality check on how difficult the league was going to be.

He added: “We know what to expect a bit more this time and will be prepared for it, but we know we will have to work hard and be competitive.”
