Luke Murphy on his unforgettable season
Luke Murphy has described the turnaround in the club’s fortunes as an ‘unbelievable achievement’ but the Alex player of the season says it hasn’t been a total surprise to the players because of the quality of the squad and the coaching staff.
Murphy cleaned up the awards at the end of the season and his 9 goals and double figures in assists has seen him linked with a possible summer move, but the captain is only focussing on making sure he is 100% for pre-season training after sustaining that groin strain towards the end of the campaign.
Murphy told crewealex.net: “It has been an unbelievable 12 months for the club. Last year was an incredible achievement, to go unbeaten and win the play-offs at Wembley and this last season was right up for different reasons.
“I think it has matched and at the beginning of the season, if you would have said we would finish mid-table and go back to Wembley and lift a trophy, then we would have definitely taken it. Saying that, when we do look back at the season there is a little bit of disappointment because we couldn’t quite push on and grab a play-off place.
“We have shown that we can compete with the top sides and other than a few of them who were very good sides, such as Brentford, we felt we could match anyone on our day.
“The success has come in a short space of time, but hasn’t been a total surprise to us because of the quality of the players and the staff. No disrespect to League Two but with the players we have and the facilities we have, we don’t really belong in that league.
He added: “For those in and around the club it hasn’t been a major surprise because we know the quality we have.”
