Steve says free week from mid-week fixture has done his players the power of good

Steve Davis says the club’s free week from a mid-week fixture has done his players the world of good and they are looking forward to tomorrow’s encounter at Colchester United. The Alex are looking to bounce back from two disappointing defeats to Hartlepool and AFC Bournemouth and keep our chances of a top six finish alive. An ambitious Steve Davis certainly won’t be giving up on that until it is mathematically impossible.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I never rule anything out and anything is possible from this group of players. They proved last season that if they can find that level of consistency that they can go on an unbeaten run.

“The lads were very disappointed to lose the last two games and looking back I think the two  semi-finals against Coventry and then going there again just days after we got through to Wembley took more out of the players than I thought. They were tired mentally and physically and then we had that journey up to Hartlepool.

“Having a week without a mid-week game has allowed us to restore that physical and mental edge by resting them and working them right. They have trained really well this week and we are looking forward to going down to Colchester and getting a result. The most important thing is to go there and not lose the match and make sure we get back on track.

“We go there in a positive frame of mind and we have focussed on ourselves and what we need to do to improve both defensively and as an attacking force.”
