"Nothing Surprises Me"

Steve Davis on his opposite number at Wembley Paul Sturrock

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that it will be a strange situation if Paul Sturrock is to lead Southend United at Wembley on April 7th. The experienced Sturrock has been replaced at Roots Hall by Phil Brown, but has been granted the opportunity to lead the Shrimpers out for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final. Sturrock will take charge of the one-off game after guiding the club to their first ever appearance at the home of football.

Steve admitted that he was surprised by Southend’s decision to relieve Sturrock of the position but allow him to take the team for the final.

The Alex boss told crewealex.net: “Nothing really surprises me in football. I found it a strange decision and I think Paul will find it difficult to take the team in the final knowing that someone else is in charge now. It’s a bit bizarre but we’ll see what happens on the day.

“I am sure it has never happened before. It is a strange one and I don’t know how Paul really feels about it. I like Paul. I got to know him quite well in last season’s play-offs and he was the first manager on the phone to congratulate us on winning promotion which was a great gesture.

I have a lot of time and respect for him.  I am not sure how Phil (Brown) will perceive everything but all we can do when the final comes around is focus on ourselves and make sure we are right.”
