We Need To Be Better

Gaffer not happy with performance

Steve Davis was left disappointed as his Crewe Alexandra failed to kill off Chester City in the club’s latest pre-season friendly.  The Alex had taken the lead via the penalty spot early on through Harry Davis, but the Conference side hit back in the second half to draw level after Tom Moore smuggling home a rebound after goalkeeper Steve Phillips had kept out a free header from Marc Williams.

After the 1-1 draw at the Deva Stadium, the Alex boss stated:  “I am disappointed. I thought that we were poor today and we need to be better than that. The players know that and there were a few honest words said in the dressing room afterwards. That is the way it has to be because we won’t accept performances like that.

“We cannot have players making the same mistakes, time and time again so we will be in to work to put it right. I don’t want them developing those bad habits so we will work until we get it right.

“It is a strong message to the players because there are plenty of players in the squad who will come in and take their place, if they are not doing what we want them to do. At the moment we have a number of them playing as individuals and doing their own thing.

“That is not for the collective or what we want to do. It was an inept performance from us today and we expect better. That is to take nothing away from Chester. They were decent and worked hard to make things difficult for us.

Steve added: “We have to be better than play today and we need to be more clinical when we do get chances. We blasted too many over the bar or didn’t get our shots off and we need to improve on that.”
