Steve Davis still to make up his mind on new captain

Steve Davis says he is still undecided about his captain for the forthcoming season. The Crewe boss is searching for a contender to succeed Luke Murphy, who left for Leeds United this summer. Midfielder Abdul Osman has led the team in the pre-season with the likes of Matt Tootle, Kelvin Mellor and Adam Dugdale all captaining the side.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I still haven’t decided on the captain. There are three or four that I could consider but we don’t have a lot of leaders.

“It could be that we have a captain, a vice captain and perhaps a club captain. Much will depend on who plays on a consistent basis and is out there training all the time. That would be leading by example in much the same Luke Murphy did for us last season. He wasn’t a shouter but led by example and took the extra responsibility on very quickly.

“We are looking for that player who can be influential both on and off the pitch. “
