Luke Murphy completes Elland Road switch

Crewe Alexandra’s Wembley winning captain Luke Murphy has joined Leeds United on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old Alsager-based youngster has agreed to move to Elland Road after Crewe accepted a late bid from Brian McDermott’s side on Sunday evening. The club had also accepted similar bids from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers and left the final decision up to the player.

Murphy came through the Academy ranks at the Alexandra Stadium, making his debut under previous manager Dario Gradi as a substitute against Swindon back in December 2008.

It was under the legendary Alex boss that Murphy really established himself as a first team regular scoring his first senior goal in a 4-1 win at Hartlepool United on what was his first full start.

Murphy went on to score 25 goals in 186 appearances over five seasons and played a fundamental role in the club’s promotion from League Two in 2012.

Under Steve Davis, Murphy succeeded the Aston Villa bound Ash Westwood as the new club captain last summer and his consistent performances in League One saw him sweep the board at the player-of-the-season awards.

Murphy rounded off a superb final season at the club with the opening goal in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final victory over Southend United.

Everyone at Crewe Alexandra wishes Murph every success in his future career.
