Lee Molyneux says step up into League One was main attraction

New signing Lee Molyneux says the opportunity to play in League One was the deciding factor in seeing him joining Crewe Alexandra. Molyneux, 24, has agreed a two-year deal after his contract at Accrington Stanley expired and will join up with his new team-mates for the trip to Cornwall tomorrow.

The former Everton trainee is pleased to have his immediate future sorted and he admits he cannot wait to get started in pre-season.

Lee told Crewe Alex Player: “I am really excited and just cannot wait to get started. I just want to get back onto the pitch, get to know the lads and I am already looking forward to the pre-season games. There are some great fixtures coming up for us.

“I had some interest from clubs in League One and League Two and have turned down some better financial offers to come to Crewe. I wanted to make that step up into League One and test myself because there are some great clubs in the division such as Wolves, Bristol City, Coventry and Sheffield United.

“I spoke to the manager (Steve Davis) and he expressed an interest in bringing me to Crewe. When I knew that and saw the place, my mind was made up almost immediately. The facilities are first class and it is a club where I can develop and improve as a player.

“There were other options but I knew coming to Crewe would be the best choice. I spoke with the manager and he told me about the one-on-one coaching and how he wanted a left footed winger.”

Molyneux, who started his young career as a left back with the likes of Everton, Southampton and Plymouth now regards himself as an attack minded winger after being moved into the position whilst at Accrington.

Lee said: “I did really well at the end of last season and had the chance to move forward and play on the left wing. I had been a left-back all my career before that but I felt move natural being allowed to attack and produce crosses and goals.

“I now regard myself as a winger and I’ve come to Crewe as a winger rather than a full-back. Crewe have had some great success on the pitch in the last couple of years, and I just want to come here and hopefully add to that.”
