Boss says overall his squad is stronger than last year

Steve Davis believes that his current squad is stronger than last season because of the three new acquisitions he has made this summer and the fact that most of his players are a year wiser in League One.

The Crewe Alexandra boss has gone on record to suggest that replacing Luke Murphy this summer ‘would be difficult’, but despite the club captain joining Leeds on Monday he remains confident that his players will remain competitive in League One.

Steve is excited by the three new summer signings, Oliver, Audel and more recently Molyneux and says that the competition it creates will force others to step up their performances.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “You have got to have competition for places and by doing that you make us stronger and improve the group. I think overall we have a better group this year.

“We have a strong unit and although they are young in terms of the average age, they have a lot of appearances under their belt. We have a good mix, have added three from the outside into that and have young Billy Waters and Liam Nolan stepping up from the Academy.

The boss added: “The squad has more experience, the majority of them have played in League One now and we have more versatility. We have players who can play in various positions and in different roles and that gives us a chance to play differently if needs be.”
