Steve: "Cannot Fault Our Effort"

Steve Davis says players will bounce back from rare home defeat

Steve Davis says his players deserved a point for their efforts after controlling much of the first half but he admits that we were not clinical enough to make Stevenage pay. Crewe thought they had snatched a point in the dying seconds when Ryan Colclough was presented with a chance after a well-worked free-kick but he screwed his free header wide of the mark.

After the club’s 2-1 defeat to Stevenage, Steve told crewealex.net: “I thought that up to their equalising goal, we were fairly in control of the game in the first half. I thought we were the better side in the first half and thought we had enough chances to have been further ahead than we were at the interval.

“So we are disappointed to lose the game in the end and the players are very down. That is good to see because they have great belief and expect to get something from every game. They are disappointed because they feel they were in control of things in the first half.

“We didn’t start too badly in the second half. In fact, I thought we started better than we have been doing, but they have got back into it from a free-kick that I didn’t think was a free-kick in the first place. He has lost his balance and gone down and then Pogs didn’t do well enough up against their lad Grant and he has allowed him to get the cross over.

“I think Steve Phillips has had three saves to make and two have gone in. They were clinical, especially with their second goal but we have presented them to them with our mistakes.

“Stevenage scored two goals during their best spell of the game and we were not clinical enough with ours. I thought we had enough changes to have got something from the game and I thought we would snatch a point at the death when Ryan had that chance. I thought he was just going to head it in. It was a free header and I expect him to score but he has missed it.

“I cannot fault the players’ effort. I thought he played some decent football land the performance was fairly good. They kept going, had a real go and pressured them but we couldn’t find the goal we arguably deserved. If it had ended 2-2 it would probably been deserved from us.”
