Steve says results vital at this stage of the season...
Steve Davis has openly admitted that his Crewe Alexandra side can play better than they have been doing recently, but he has been pleased with his team’s resilience. Crewe reached 40 points on Saturday thanks to a hard fought point at Leyton Orient and Davis admits that never-say-die-attitude is vital at this stage of the season.
Ahead of tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Bradford, Steve said: “We have not been playing as well as we would have liked. We have lacked that fluency we have had previously.
“We can play much better football than we have been doing, but the results have been there and that is the most important thing.
“It is vital that we keep getting those wins at this stage of the season. We are in the top ten in the league and still in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, so there is plenty to play for.
“If we have to battle away to get results then that is what we will do. There is no point playing well and getting beat. I was reading the programme notes of Ronnie Moore at Tranmere and he was saying exactly the same thing. It is about results.
“We would like to be playing better, combing better and playing with more skill. That is what you look for but sometimes you have to hang in there, scrap and pick up points that way.
“There is pressure in all the games and the players have to cope with that. They did that last season, when we went on an excellent run to win promotion, with more pressure on each game towards the end. They have proven that they can handle things.”
