Bakes rules out moves for defenders

Neil Baker says the club won’t be in the market for a new defender any time soon, such has been the improvement in youngsters Kelvin Mellor, Jon Guthrie and George Ray. Baker says the senior three of Harry Davis, Adam Dugdale and Mark Ellis are battling it out for the two players in the centre of the defence and when you include the experienced Matt Tootle and Gregor Robertson in the equation, Baker says they are looking for any new recruitments’ in defence.

Baker told crewealex.net: “The area which doesn’t really concern us when it comes to recruitment is in defence. I think we have really good cover and competition there and the younger ones at getting better.

“Kelvin has improved since coming into the side at around this time last year and will only get better with experience. He has played a few positions for us already and can play at centre-half if needs be as well.

“Jon made his first start away at Bournemouth and handled the occasion. He did fine. He made a mistake that he will learn from but overall he played well.

“George Ray is another one who is improving as well. He is a better player than he was this time last year and we still have high hopes for him, as another one to come through.

“When you also include Toots and Gregor in that, then I think we are fine in that department.”
