Steve says JPT Area Final is on backburner as Crewe aim to stay in touch with top six

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that he will continue to take it one game of a time and consider a two-legged Area final against Coventry City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy when it comes around. Davis is delighted that the club have two great occasions to look forward to but will make sure his squad concentrate firmly on their league game.

The Alex boss will be hoping that Saturday’s match at Bournemouth will get the go-ahead this weekend after our home match with MK Dons was postponed due to the adverse weather conditions.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I always want the club to go as far as we can in all cup competitions. It is always nice to go as far as you can in all of them. I wanted to go further in the FA Cup than we did because that is the best competition but we didn’t.

“So to now to be involved in an Area Final in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy against Coventry is great for everyone. We have given the competition the respect it deserves throughout by selecting the strongest team we could for each game.

“I think we have had our reward for that and we can now look forward to two really good games with the winner going through to play at Wembley. We had a memorable day in May in the play-offs and we would love to get back there for everyone associated with the club.

“The lads will be doing their best to get there again but it won’t interfere with our league programme. We have some tough games coming up and we want to stay in touch and get closer to that top six if we can.

Steve added: “The players know that if the league form suffers then they could lose their place. The players out of the team know they have a part to play and that they will get an opportunity if the league results suffer."
