Phillips happy with competition for place
Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips is relishing the competition for the Alex’s number one jersey.
After missing the early part of the season through a knee injury, Phillips has been given his chance in the Crewe team of late after Alan Martin suffered an illness over the festive period.
Phillips has grabbed his chance with both hands and was amongst the Man-Of-The-Match contenders in Crewe’s New Year’s Day win over Carlisle United.
With Martin now back in full-training, and young keeper Ben Garrett rapidly emerging as another challenge to his first-team place, Phillips is all too aware how important it is to perform if he wants to keep his place in the Crewe side throughout the closing months of the 2012/13 season.
Phillips told crewealex.net: “Alan, Ben and I are a unit. We all work very closely together and all have a very good relationship. Whoever plays will be playing on merit that is the way it is.
I missed out at the start of the season because of my knee injury, Alan has now missed out through illness. That is the way it goes.
“When I put my coaches hat, whoever plays, if they do the business then it is job done. Luckily for me I’m in at the moment. But on the whole the goalkeeping situation at the club is very healthy.
