Crewe Make Splash

14 February 2013

Alex take part in the Johnstone's Paint Pot Challenge

Crewe Alexandra continued their strong affinity with this season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy by turning on the style in their attempt at the Paint Pot Challenge.

The npower League 1 outfit have reached the Northern Area Final and are well placed to make it all the way to Wembley following their 3-0 victory over Coventry at the Ricoh Arena in last week’s first leg.

And they impressed once again in thePaint Pot Challenge, accumulating a total of 25 points to take them into joint second place.

The Railwaymen were represented by 10 players in the challenge, which tests the crossing ability of the most competent footballer.

The Paint Pot Challenge involves players trying to chip a ball from the corner of the 18-yard box situated in a central position on the six yard line.

A perfect ‘lick’ for a successful chip-in is worth 10 points, while one point is awarded for each attempt which ‘brushes’ the paint pot.

Crewe managed two ‘licks’ with Kelvin Mellor and Ryan Colclough both executing perfect attempts to find the target.

They were backed up by five of their team-mates who ‘brushed’ the paint pot to give Crewe a score of 25 points.

That matched the tally achieved by Coventry City and leaves the two clubs - rivals in the Northern Area final - tied in second place behind leaders Oxford United, who continue to lead the way on 32 points.

“As their score suggests, Crewe’s efforts were amongst the best we have seen this season,” said Ben Wilde, Johnstone’s Paint Brand and Sponsorship Manager.

“On top of their two perfect attempts, they also had a number of near misses which could have taken them into the lead.

“Along with reaching the Northern Area Final, Crewe have had a memorable year in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and Paint Pot Challenge.”

The winning team will receive £2,000 of Johnstone’s Paint product to be used in a project around the club, with £1,000 and £500 on offer for the teams which finish second and third.
