Steve says he won't look elsewhere for possible Pogs replacement

Steve Davis, the Crewe Alexandra manager, says he will dip into the transfer market to find a replacement for the injured Mathias Pogba. The club’s leading goalscorer from last season is now expected to be for a few months after suffering cartilage damage from his pre-season clash with Scott Wootton.

Davis says he will use the strikers’ at his disposal for the time being and has not totally ruled out using the experienced Nathan Ellington if he can prove his fitness and sharpness.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It is difficult to replace Pogbs and the presence he can give us either through the middle or from a wide area. He was our top scorer last season with 16 goals and it is a blow to lose him at the start of the season.

“We do have other options though and I won’t be looking elsewhere for a replacement. We will look to our own to do that.

“Vadaine is back fit now and has that presence and ability in the air. Nathan (Ellington) is still with us and played a bit of the game at New Mills on Wednesday and was okay. It is just a question of him proving his fitness.

The manager added: “We do have options and of course, we have Max and AJ who have started the season in the team.”
