Gaffer pleased to have got season up and running with three points

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says it was ‘nice to put a smile on faces’ after his side picked up their first three points of the season with a hard fought 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers. It perhaps should have been more comfortable than it was after Tranmere had Danny Holmes sent off in the first half for two bookable offences, but Crewe managed to see the job through thanks to Ryan Colclough’s finely taken brace.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It is always nice to get that first win of the season and get those three points. What you don’t want is for it to go on and on and for the players and supporters to become anxious. You can sense that and it was nice to get the win and put some smiles on people’s face again.

“Now we have to build on that and take it into the next game against another tough opponent. I am glad the short wait is over and that first win in the league has happened for us.

“I thought we started well and were on the front foot. We were causing them problems and the tempo was really high but I think we lost that tempo in the second half. We slowed down and didn’t move the ball around as well as we did in the first half and that is something we will look at.

“We have a young group, as we always do and it is a learning process for them. They are still learning the game and will only get better.”
