Boss says opening day line-up shows that players have to perform
Steve Davis has hinted that he may make a few changes to the side that started on the opening day of the 2013/14 season. The Alex boss says he will assess the fitness of a few before deciding on his starting line-up for the trip to Bury in the League Cup tomorrow night.
Davis perhaps surprised a few by naming Alan Martin and George Ray in his starting XI for the visit of Rotherham on Saturday, but the boss was quick to point out that they were included on merit over the pre-season.
Steve explained to the club’s official web-site: “I selected a team that I thought would beat Rotherham. That is the way I have always done in and I picked the players who were in-form over the pre-season. I took into account their performances over the summer and the training and they were in on merit.
“I didn’t consider their past, it was the 11 who had been in-form and were deserving of chance. I may make some changes for the trip to Bury. There won’t be too many, but there could be an opportunity for one or two to stake their claim.
“The competition for places is good and the team that begins the first game is very rarely the one that goes through the season.”
