Boss on why it is unlikely that veteran goalkeeper Phillips will go out on loan

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has told crewealex.net that is it unlikely that his experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips will be able to leave on loan. Phillips says he would welcome the idea of getting some competitive games under his belt if he cannot displace the current number one Alan Martin, but Davis says he wants the former Bristol City and Bristol Rovers stopper to remain here and apply the pressure.

The Crewe boss is also unsure if any loan deal would fit in with Phillips’ Academy and first-team coaching duties.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I saw that Steve said he might go on loan if he is not playing here, but I don’t want to lose him and I’m not sure a loan would fit in with his coaching responsibilities here.

“He has the coaching with the first-team and within the Academy to fulfil and besides he may get a chance here. He did last season. I want him to keep working hard and offering that competition for the place.

“I can understand him waiting to play. That is what I want but I’m not sure he could go out on loan and just play for them on a Tuesday or a Saturday.”
