Steve says team selection always judged on performances

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that he will continue to try out different systems to get the best out of his team. The Alex boss has been reluctant to make changes for changes sake this season, giving the players currently in possession of the shirts enough time to stake their claim for regular football.

The likes of Alan Martin and George Ray kept their places for the opening games of the season due to their consistent displays in pre-season and Davis explains that fairness is a major part of his man-management.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I think we have done okay so far this season, but the players know we can do better. We should have more points than we have, but on the other hand our performances can improve.

“We have looked fairly comfortable in the 4-2-3-1 and our approach has been good. We have created chances in every game, but we will look to improve and look at different things. In time, we will get better.

“I have selected players on merit. The likes of Alan (Martin) and George (Ray) started the season in the team because they deserved to be in. They played well and trained well over pre-season and in any walk of life, if you work hard then you should be rewarded.

“You have to stick with your players and give them a chance. Putting them in the team and then taking them out after a mistake isn’t the answer. We are about producing players and giving them that experience as well.

He added: “I have always managed like that. If a player deserves to be in the team then I will pick him. I don’t have any favourites and everything is done on merit.”
