Boss Narrows It To 3

1 August 2013

Between Duggy, Davis or Abs for the armband

Steve Davis has said that he hopes his selection of a new club captain will quickly grow into his new role. Davis is hoping that the added responsibility of the captain’s armband will see an increase in performance much in the same way it helped Ashley Westwood and Luke Murphy last season. Both players went on to secure lucrative moves to Aston Villa and Leeds United respectively.

The Alex boss has tried out different players in pre-season with the likes of Matt Tootle, Kelvin Mellor, Harry Davis, Adam Dugdale and Abdul Osman all wearing the armband at various times over the course of our ten friendly matches.

Following the 2-0 defeat to a Manchester United XI on Monday night, the Alex boss narrowed down his selection to three possible candidates and it will be between Dugdale, Davis or Osman for the captaincy.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We need leaders and it will be one of three. It will be between Duggy, Harry or Abdul. All have the credentials to be captain and I’m sure that if they are given the armband that they take on the extra responsibility very quickly.

“It happened with Luke last season. He was quiet with his approach and was never a shouter. He led by example and his performances were on a high standard. It helped with his consistency and I am hoping it will have the desired effect again.

“I look for that quality and I’m sure the captain will grow into the role. There are three on the hit-list and it will be a great honour for one of them.”
