Davis eyes second round tie

Steve Davis is quick to dismiss Bury’s relegation and their opening day loss to Chesterfield as any sort of marker for tonight’s Capital One clash at Gigg Lane.

Crewe will start as favourites to progress to Round Two, but Davis knows that anything can happen in a one-off cup tie.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I don’t think it matters too much if you are in League One or League Two for a one-off cup tie. Anything can happen and we know that.

“We will prepare exactly the same way. Bury may have been relegated last season and had some financial troubles but they will be up for it and will be wanting to progress into the next round as much as we are.

“We want some cup runs and we always take them seriously. Last year we got through to the second round of this competition and were rewarded with a trip to West Ham. That was a great experience for the players and the supporters and we would be looking to do the same again.

“Bury have had to bring in a lot of new players and that can take some time to gel. That can be difficult but with Kevin (Blackwell) in charge they are more than capable of improving and having a good season.

The boss added: “A cup tie could bring anything and it has to be decided on the night, so I would prefer if it is done and dusted in the 90 minutes, but the most important thing is to get the result and get into the next round.”
