Toots: "A Great Way To Finish"

Matt Tootle on an emotional last day for the club

One of our Academy graduates, Matt Tootle says that lining up in a home grown eleven for our final game against Walsall was the most fitting way to end a successful season. Tootle was part of the historic Crewe side that defeated the Saddlers 2-0 thanks to a penalty from Luke Murphy and a stunner from the on-loan Chuks Aneke.

Tootle told crewealex.net: “There were a few people who wrote us off against Walsall because we put a few young lads in. It was a great result and a great experience for Ben (Garratt), George (Ray) and Ryan (Colclough) who have not played a lot of games. It was good to keep a clean sheet and end the season with three points.

“Their front four were tricky and quick, so it was a good test for our young back five. We dealt with it and it is something we can build on for next season.

“It was great to be a part of the home grown team and it was quite emotional coming out at the start. It was like playing with your mates and five of the team came through the same Youth Team as me as well, so it was a very special day.

“It was another piece of history and a great way to end the season. It was a memorable day for everyone connected with Crewe.”
