Steve: "An Important Win"

Alex boss delighted after 1-0 win over Sheffield United

Steve Davis was full of praise for his Alex side after they got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United at Gresty Road.  A stunning second-half from Arsenal loanee secured the win for the Alex as they recorded an important win after four defeats on the bounce.

Davis was impressed with the way his young side competed against the physical threat of an experienced Sheffield United side, and felt the high pressing nature of the second half display was crucial in the victory.

Speaking after the game, Steve told crewealex.net: “I am delighted with the win because we have had a bad spell after the Wembley game. I have found it difficult to pick them up after the Final because Wembley is associated with the end of the season, but we have had six really tough games after the Final.

“But they responded tonight with a real battling performance which also had some quality too. We won it with a great goal from Chuks and it was worthy of winning the game. He is capable of doing that and I thought he was excellent tonight.

“A lot of the teams up at the top rely on the second ball and we competed very well with that. We pressurised them very well and competed toe-to-toe with them which was very important in getting the win.

“It wasn’t an end of season game, both sides wanted to win the game and I am delighted that we managed to do it. We had pride to play for tonight and the players wanted to win for that.

“They didn’t deserve to lose at Yeovil on Saturday, and I was really pleased with the way they performed in that game. The boys can now take real confidence from this win tonight because it shows that they can do it against the top teams.”
