Davis pleased with performance but unhappy with the goals we conceded

Steve Davis, the Crewe Alexandra manager admits he may ‘have been a little harsh’ on his players after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to table topping Doncaster Rovers. Davis was understandably disappointed with the two goals we conceded to the Doncaster substitute Billy Paynter but says there were positives to take from the overall performance.

Crewe had taken the lead through youngster Max Clayton but the introduction of Paynter for Iain Hume certainly changed the game in Brian Flynn’s favour.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I thought we played reasonably well on Saturday. I’ve watched the game back again and we played some good football. I may not have given the players as much credit as I should have afterwards.

“I was disappointed with the goals we conceded and we were punished for those mistakes. I was disappointed and we spoke about it after the game because those little mistakes cost us a deserved point.

“We were much better than we were in mid-week against Brentford and I was pleased with that. We perhaps were suffering with a cup hangover after the Sunday, but we seemed to be over that on Saturday.

“We have four remaining games left and we will be looking to take some scalps and spoil some parties, because we are playing teams in and around the play-offs.

He added: “We have proven that we can beat teams at the top of the league and that is a positive we can take that into next season. We have shown we are good enough to compete.”
