Steve says fringe have three matches to show that they are good enough to move us forward next season

Steve Davis says that his fringe players will have to show that they are good enough in the remaining three matches of the season to justify a place in his squad for next season. The Alex boss selected a young looking side at Swindon last night and at times we struggled to contain them, resulting in a heavy 4-1 defeat.

On the other hand we created chances of our own, with Byron Moore clipping the crossbar and having a one-on-one saved by Wes Foderingham in the Swindon goal. Kelvin Mellor had one off the line in the first half and both Mark Ellis and Nathan Ellington also went close.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We have three games left and I have to see if these players are good enough. We have lost four or five of our key players recently through injury or suspension and this has given them their chance.

“They have to show that they are good enough and I told them that after the game. They have to perform and produce. Some of them are playing for contracts and perhaps that has been on their minds a bit, but they have to keep working hard and show what they can do in the remaining three games.

“Some of them struggled and some of them did okay. I was disappointed with the goals we conceded. We made too many mistakes but you will get that with inexperienced and young players.

Steve added: “Saying that they kept going and made chances in the game. We need to have a look at them and see if they are good enough for the division.”
