Kelvin Mellor pleased for likable Ray

Kelvin Mellor has been impressed by the impact his young team-mate George Ray has made in recent games and says that there is more to come from the Warrington-born centre-half. Ray was handed his senior debut at Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final win over Southend United and was then given his full debut in the home encounter with top of the table Doncaster.

The teenager was then called upon to replace the injured Mark Ellis at half-time on what proved to be a tough night for our young squad at Swindon. Ray again equipped himself well and restricted a rampant Swindon to just the one goal in the second half.

Mellor, who himself won the supporters’ Young Player-of-the-Season award last weekend said: “George is a good young player and one they always thought would come through the Academy and do well.

“He has been called up for the Wales Under-21 and to get on at Wembley, for his debut is something he won’t forget.

“I think the first start so soon after that came as a bit of surprise for him. I don’t think he was expecting that but I thought he coped very well against the top team in the division. It was a very good debut for him and he did well again at Swindon in difficult circumstances.

“He has made a promising start and I’m sure there is more to come from him in the future because he is a good player and a confident lad. Nothing fazes him.”
