Davis takes great pride in club's production line

Steve Davis has told crewealex.net that the club take great pride in promoting young players into our first-team and then hopefully seeing them progress to play at the highest level they can.

After our previous manager Gudjon Thordarson named a Crewe Alexandra side without a single youth product in it when he was in charge, Davis has continued the club’s philosophy of producing from within. He named 9 Academy graduates for the Play-Off Final last season, six in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final and tomorrow he will start 11 home-grown players against Walsall.

Steve told crewealex.net: “Ever since Dario came here back in the early 1980s, Crewe have always given young players a chance. Along the way we have produced some top quality players and a lot of them have gone on to play at a high level and represent their countries.

“That is what we aim to do. We aim to produce good young players, who are good enough to play in our first team and some of them go on a play a lot higher. If we can produce some high quality players that can go to represent their respective countries, then that’s even better.

“We have had Platty, Murphy, Dean Ashton, Seth, Neil Lennon, there has been quite a few and we hope Nick Powell will go on and join them in the future. If that helps England become better, that is a real bonus because we have some catching up to do.

Steve added: “I want our young lads to go out and express themselves and to try and win the game. I want to win every game we possibly can and Saturday will be the same. I want to win and finish the season on 64 points, which would be a great achievement.”
