Phillips and Pogs give Alex boost with return to training

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis will be boosted with the return to training of goalkeeper Steve Phillips and his joint leading scorer Mathias Pogba. Phillips missed the entire pre-season after needing a precautionary knee operation. Pogba has not featured since the club’s 5-1 defeat at Brentford after aggravating some knee ligaments.

Young full-back Andy White is also back to boost numbers after a couple of niggling injuries and winger Michael West is not far off a return himself from a knee injury.

Steve Davis after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient that he may re-evaluate his options in the loan market but said he won’t do anything too ‘drastic’ with players returning from injury.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We do have a young squad but that is the Crewe way and before we assessed where we were, I wanted to give our younger players an opportunity.

“We managed to do that and we do have some players coming back to training. Steve Phillips and Pogs are back with us and so is Andy White. Michael West is still a bit off but not by much.

“Chuks (Aneke) has one game left to serve for his ban, so we are looking better off.

The boss added: “With those players coming back, it means I don’t have to do anything silly or drastic in the loan market but we will assess it if anything interests us.”
