Davis turns to Murph as captain

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that he handed midfielder Luke Murphy the captain’s armband to give him more responsibility. Murphy was named captain for the first time on Saturday following Ash Westwood’s departure to Aston Villa and alongside Abdul Osman; he helped Crewe record a 1-0 win over Coventry City.

After Max Clayton’s winning goal, Davis told the club’s official web-site: “I didn’t have that much choice because we are a young team. Murph has a lot of experience and has played a lot of games.

“Byron and Gregor have played a lot of games as well but they are quiet lads. I wanted to give Murph extra responsibility like we did for Ash.

“I didn’t say anything to him beforehand, I just threw him the armband and said you are captain today. He took the job on and full credit to him. Now we want him to see him maintain that.”
