Max Could Feature

Davis hoping Clayton will be okay to face Tranmere

Crewe Alexandra are hoping that their young strike Max Clayton will still be able to feature for the club this weekend against Tranmere Rovers. Clayton is away on International duty with England Under-19s this week and may feature in a friendly against Germany on Thursday evening.

Having spoken to Noel Blake at the weekend, Steve Davis has been assured that Clayton will only play for 45 minutes against the Germans and will be assessed on Friday ahead of our home match.

Clayton, 18, scored the only goal of the game to defeat Coventry last weekend and has been outstanding form this season.

Davis told the club’s official web-site: “Max is away with England at the moment and will play in a friendly against Germany on Thursday.

“I’ve spoken to Noel (Blake) on Saturday, he attended our youth game and then the Coventry game and he knows how Max has been in and around the team for us. We had a chat and Max will only play for 45 minutes. I don’t think that will be too much for him, so we will assess how he is on Friday.

“If he is okay then he could play, if he isn’t then he will still be on the bench. That is how important he has become for us.

“Noel and England have always been very good with our kids and he is always on the phone asking how much he has been playing. There is a lot of dialogue and that is what you want.

He added: “When Nick (Powell) was with us I told Noel he was a bit tired once and he said okay and didn’t take him. He has always listened to the club managers and we have a good relationship because we want our players to play for England or whichever country they can represent.”
