Martin could be set for new deal after fine start to the season

Alan Martin’ superb start to the new season could well see him rewarded with a contract extension. The former Leeds United and Ayr United goalkeeper signed a six-month deal in the summer as Steve Davis and Neil Baker offered him an incentive to get fit and push move for a first-team place.

With the experienced goalkeeper Steve Philips ruled out with a knee injury over the pre-season and into the opening games of the new season, Martin has grabbed his chance with both gloves and has put in some outstanding performances to help Crewe into a mid-table spot in League One. His clean-sheet against Coventry was his first in the Football League and with Phillips stepping up his recovery following a small operation to remove a lump from his knee, the challenge for the number one spot is certainly hotting up.

Davis has suggested that Martin’s early season form could see the popular Scot rewarded with a contract extension.

The boss told crewealex.net: “I’ve told those who did well that we will have a look at their contracts again at Christmas. The likes of AJ and Max are doing well and then there is Alan Martin.

“Alan is only on a six-month deal so we'll assess that. He has done really well since he came back and we will have a look at that.”
