Max quick to share the praise after his award

Crewe Alexandra’s Max Clayton says it was a team effort that helped him win the Football League Young Player of the Month award for August. Clayton picked up the award yesterday, but was quick to thank his teammates for helping him adjust to regular starts in the Football League.

Clayton was used as a regular substitute in Crewe’s promotion campaign last season, but has started this season firmly in Steve Davis’ first-team plans and Max feels that his experiences from last season have been highly beneficial in making that step.

But Clayton is now determined to build on his impressive first month, and is looking to be more clinical in front of goal and help the Alex succeed in League One.

Clayton told Crewe Alex Player: “I think I have a good start to the season. It is a brilliant start to the year, but of course this wouldn’t have been possible without the regular football that Steve and Bakes have given me. The team has also played really well which has helped too.

“I think I have adapted quite well to starting games. In many ways last year was just a taster for me and I think that Steve and Bakes handled feeding me in to the side really well.

“Now I think I just need to be a little more ruthless in front of goal, that is not just me, the whole team need to. We are playing well and are adapting well to this league, and once the goals start coming I’m sure we will really do well.”
