Goalkeeper could be named in squad for first time this season

Crewe Alexandra’s experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips could be named in the first team squad for the first time this season for Saturday’s trip to Walsall. Phillips, who has not featured this season after a long-term knee injury has made a successful return to training and is under consideration for the trip to the Bescot Stadium.

Phillips knows he has a fight on to regain the number one spot after Alan Martin’s impressive start to the season. Martin is in possession of the first team spot but a fit-again Phillips will apply pressure.

Steve Davis says a fit-again and vocal Phillips will make a difference to his squad: “Steve is a very experienced and very bubbly around the place, so it will be very good to have back with us.

“He is a great character, vocal and positive in the dressing room, so it is only good that he is back in the dressing room.

“At the moment, Alan deserves his place and it is up to Steve to try and get him out of the team. We have been pleased with Alan, but he will know he has a real challenge on his hands now and has to keep on performing to a high standard to stay in.”
