Steve says a gap exists between the two clubs due to budget
Steve Davis has told crewealex.net that there is still a considerable gap between his Crewe Alexandra side and tonight’s visitors Swindon Town, but that it remains his aim to bridge that gap as soon as possible. Crewe lost 3-0 at the County Ground on the opening day of last season but responded superbly to overcome Paolo Di Canio’s champions in the return fixture last March. While Di Canio’s side deservedly went onto to lift the npower League Two title, Crewe snuck into the play-offs on the final day and completed a remarkable turnaround in our season by winning at Wembley in the Play-Off Final.
“Swindon have the budget to bring in the players they want. They can go out and get those experienced players in. They can identify targets and attract them because they can pay more wages than we can.
Ahead of the visit of the Robins, Steve told the official web-site:
“We approach things from a different perspective and try to promote from within. That is why our younger players may need time to adjust to this league and to what is expected of them. I am banking on the fact that my players will find their feet, improve over the season and we will be fine.
“Swindon are different to us. They have money to entice players and they are where they are. They were the outstanding team in the league below last season and we snuck into the play-offs on the final day of the season. There is a gap between us, but it is my aim to bridge that type of gap.
“We will try that by developing our own players and giving them a chance, because we cannot really afford to do what Swindon do and the turnaround of players they have.
He added: “I want to play our younger players, give them a chance and perhaps add one or two from outside as we go along. “
