Steve eager for current number one Alan Martin to sign new deal

Steve Davis has revealed that he has made an offer to goalkeeper Alan Martin and he is hoping the club’s current number one will sign it in due course. Davis has been suitably impressed with not only the performances of his Scottish goalkeeper but also his work ethic and application after he set him the task of challenging for the number one jersey this season.

A knee injury to Steve Phillips allowed Martin to start the season in the side and the former Leeds and Ayr man has certainly grasped his chance with both gloves, so much so that the club are eager for him to extend his stay beyond January.

Steve told the club’s official web-site “I have spoken to Alan and we have made him offer and he is thinking it over. That is fine and we hope he will stay and continues doing what he is doing. I haven’t spoken to him again about it since then.

“We have been delighted with him. He has come in because Steve has been injured and done very well for us. He has certainly taken his opportunity and he has consistently made good saves in the games.

“He has made a couple of mistakes because he is going to. He is a young goalkeeper and has never been a regular in his career, so he is still finding his feet a bit but he has done really well.

“We spoke to Alan in the summer about his attitude and his fitness and he came back determined, in shape and ready to challenge. I thought last season because Steve (Phillips) was performing well that he had almost accepted that he was going to be on the bench. I didn’t want that and told him that I wanted two number one goalkeepers and I think we have that now.

The boss added: “With Steve coming back into it, it only means that Alan has to up his game again because he is waiting in the wings for his chance. Al is sharp in his focus and he knows he has to keep playing well to keep his place. There are two very good goalkeepers challenging for the one place.”
