Steve Davis celebrates his first year anniversary as manager of Crewe Alexandra Football Club this weekend and what a 12 months it has been! Davis took over a club embroiled in a potential relegation scrap and converted them into a promotion winning team. To lift the club from the lower reaches of League Two and into Play-Off winners at Wembley was in the words of Davis himself ‘an absolute dream’.

Davis put the transformation down to hard work, restoring some confidence and belief in the players and providing a positive outlook for the future. 

In one of his most honest and revealing interviews to date, the Alex boss told Crewe Alex Player: “The last twelve months has flown by and last season, going on that long unbeaten run and winning at Wembley was like a dream.

“It was my finest achievement in my career because it was so unexpected. When I took over a year ago, the place was a bit flat and despondent because we were not playing as well as we could with the group of players we had.

“Slowly and steadily we managed to change things around. There were things I wanted to introduce and the players responded to that. I think I was able to get into their heads a bit and restore some confidence and belief. We got them going again and the players and all the staff worked really hard to achieve what we did.

“We managed to win at Morecambe with that late goal from Max (Clayton) and we took it on from there. We did suffer blips along the way, such as Bradford on Boxing Day when we had a bad result or performance but they always bounced back from it. We didn’t have back-to-back defeats and the key that was long unbeaten run towards the end of the season.

“The confidence was really there and they didn’t know when they were beaten. To go on to win at Wembley, in the manner that we did with all the supporters there and with 9 Academy lads in the team was something we will never forget.”
