Steve: "Ref Call Was Right"

Steve on Saturday's postponed fixture against the Cherries

Steve Davis, the Crewe Alexandra manager says that referee Lee Collins was right to postpone Saturday’s home game against Bournemouth due to a waterlogged pitch. With excess rainfall on the Friday night/Saturday morning, the Football League’s fixture programme was hit all over the country and although our ground staff did their best to clear the pitch of surface water, the match official deemed it unplayable on safety grounds.

Steve explained to crewealex.net: “The safety of the players is paramount, first and foremost and in those conditions, with surface water on certain areas of the pitch, the referee was correct in his judgement.

“The ball wasn’t bouncing or rolling properly in certain areas and although it did stop raining it wasn’t draining enough. There was a lot of rain over the last 24 hours and we gave it every chance. The referee came and did two inspections and with a third of the pitch under some water, he didn’t have a lot of choice.

“It is disappointing because we were looking forward to the game. We had a virtually fit squad to choice from and would have gone into the game in good form. Bournemouth are flying as well, so it would have been a good game, but you cannot control the weather.”
