Steve gives us his reaction after 2-1 win at Boundary Park
"It is a good way to end the year and now we can look forward to Carlisle. I have thoroughly enjoyed 2012 and the players have had a great time by working hard to win promotin and then testing themselves on League One. All I can promise is that we will continue to work hard, improve and see where that takes us.""It was a battle and the players did that for us today. Mark Ellis has missed his kick to let their lad in and he has tucked it into the corner, so it was a disappointing goal for us to concede but credit to him he has gone up the other end and made up for it by heading in the winning goal at the far post. It was a great bit of play from Byron in that 1v1 situation. He has shown great desire and pace to go on the outside and reach the by-line and he has clipped over a perfect cross. Mark is there to prod home with his head and from then on I thought we would hold on to win.
"He doesn't score many with his left foot but if you don't shoot then you cannot score and he got a bit lucky with the deflection to wrong foot the keeper but that is what can happen. The game was always a bit scrappy and the pitch was lively because of the rain but the pitch did hold up very well. It was difficult to play a lot of football on it so it became a bit of a battle and I thought our three centre-halves dealt with the high balls into Smith and he late onslaught.
Steve Davis was a delighted manager as his side finished 2012 on a real high with a 2-1 win at Boundary Park. Afterwards the Alex boss told crewealex.net: "We had two great chances early on and we should have been 2-0 up but they also had a great chance when their striker (Smith) mis-kicked in front of goal, so it could have been 2-1 at half-time. I just said to Pogba at half-time, don't worry about the miss, keep going and you will get another chance. If it does come along make sure you score and to his credit he has tried his luck from 25 yards wit his left foot.
