Boss says players have to switch on quicker

Steve Davis is demanding a better level of concentration after a slow start allowed Burton Albion to race into another early lead at Gresty Road on Saturday. Calvin Zola’s header four minutes into the game proved the difference on the day, to knock Crewe out of the FA Cup at the second round stage.

Davis was disappointed with the way we allowed the cross from Jordan Chappell from our left hand side to enter our penalty area so easily. The Alex boss says his team have to switch on quicker in games.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We conceded another early goal against Burton and made things difficult for ourselves because it gave them something to defend and hold onto.

“I stressed before the game, the importance of blocking crosses going into our box with Zola around. We didn’t deal at all well with the initial throw-in. It was a lack of concentration from Gregor (Robertson) and Byron (Moore) on that side and that needs looking at because it is not what they practice.

“That allowed the free man to deliver a high ball and it should have been dealt with by the centre-halves. Alan (Martin) has made a poor decision and big Calvin has nodded it into an empty net.

“I was disappointed with the goal we gave away, because we switched off and it proved costly."
