U21 Report | Crewe 3-1 Hull

20 February 2023

  • Crewe back on winning track
  • Three different scorers
  • Charlie Finney completes more minutes as part of his recovery

Mike Jackson's three attackers all return in today's Professional Development League as Ty Webster, Matus Holicek and Max Woodcock claim a spot on the scoresheet.

After a slow opening to the game, Webster was able to break the deadlock in the 38th minute with a lovely strike from the edge of the area low into the corner of Dave Robson's goal.

Four minutes later, Holicek was able to finish off a well-worked move by Owen Lunt, Charlie Finney and Zak Kempster-Down. The latter found the midfielder inside the penalty area, who was able to cushion his effort into the back of the net.

The second half started similar to the first with limited opportunities for both sides, but it was Hull who were in the ascendancy.

Tom Booth had to be alert to the short back pass which forced a corner for the visitors and then he was called into action again with a long-range strike.

From the resulting corner, Alfie Taylor for the Tigers lifted his header over the top of Booth's goal.

Connor Evans thought he had managed to put the Alex three ahead as his header flew past the Hull stopper, but only to see the linesman with his flag up.

With both teams making changes in the second period, Calum Agius was introduced for Webster and was immediately involved with the action.

Hull failed to clear the ball on numerous occasions just inside their own box, and Agius capitalised on their mistakes. His ball across the six-yard box was met by Woodcock who fired in a third with two minutes left on the clock.

The Tigers managed to get a consolation goal back through second-half substitute Jake Brown, but then the referee blew his whistle just after.

Subs not used: Flint, Nolan, Robinson

Hull: Robson, Nevin, Furtado, Whittingham, Leckie, Taylor, Hall, Opoku (Brown 63'), Simms, Wood, Jarvis.
