U23 Report: Crewe 1-4 Watford

9 October 2019

Crewe Alexandra Under 23’s fell to defeat after Watford’s attacking quality was too much for the younger than usual side.

Crewe matched their Hertfordshire opponents for the opening 25 minutes with the only chance falling to Hungbo at close range, his volley was sent across goal and wide of Sam Booth’s goal.

On the 26th minute Henry Wise sent a low driven cross across the Crewe box which found Hungbo at the far post. It was elementary for the Watford youngster who couldn’t miss the empty net.

Still recovering from the opening goal, only three minutes later Dalby found himself ten yards from goal and made no mistake in punishing the Crewe defence firing through Booth’s legs.

The 43rd minute brought some joy to the Crewe crowd when Lewis Reilly had seemingly brought the home side within one before half-time. However, the linesman denied the striker with the offside flag.

Only a minute later Tyreece Onyeka had a long-range strike expertly saved by Watford keeper Adam Parkes.

After the break Watford extended their lead to three after Hungbo grabbed his second of the game with a tidy finish into the roof of the net.

Crewe would pull a goal back in the 64th minute after Tyreece Onyeka was rewarded for chasing a loose ball after a Watford defender slipped and allowed Onyeka an easy shot on goal.

Dalby would also score his second of the game after converting a well struck corner from close range.

Booth would continue to make saves as Watford continued to push for a fifth but the Crewe keeper was solid throughout.

Crewe: Booth, Djalo, Woodthorpe, Lundstram, Sass-Davies, Offord, Griffiths, Robbins, Reilly, Onyeka, Lomas (Subs: Lokko, Southern)
