U23: Crewe Host Sheff Wed Today

10 December 2018

Crewe Alexandra Under 23s take on Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon in their latest Professional Development League 2 match.

The contest takes place at the Alexandra Park Training Complex at Reaseheath & kicks off at 1pm. Entry is free to supporters.

Whilst the teams' six match winning run came to an end with a draw against Burnley last week, it's now seven unbeaten for Alex Morris' side.

In fact, the last team to beat them was today's opponents Sheffield Wednesday - a 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture in Yorkshire in October.

Dave Richards, Oli Finney, Owen Dale, Michael Raynes & Kevin O'Connor could all feature as well as the usual first year pros.

U23 Report: Crewe 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Crewe Alexandra Under 23s produced a stunning injury time comeback to rescue a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Reaseheath.

Goalkeeper Dave Richards struck the equaliser with the last kick of the game when going up for a corner kick, after Lewis Reilly had given the side hope with a goal just moments earlier.

The visiting Owls controlled the game in the first half in terms of possession & intent, but only created two clear chances of note before the opening goal.

Ciaran Brennan had a header from a corner cleared off the line just five minutes in & Jack Stobbs curled a left-footer just wide of the far post in the 37th minute.

The visitors were then gifted an opportunity to open the scoring in first half stoppage time when the referee pointed to the spot for an alleged shirt pulling offence from a corner.

The experienced George Boyd stepped up to send Richards the wrong way & caress his penalty kick home.

Into the second period & Crewe emerged a different animal, adding tempo & purpose to their play.

Suddenly, Wednesday were on the back foot as Billy Sass-Davies had a header cleared off the line on the hour mark.

The chances kept coming & the best of them came to the in-form Oli Finney, but his finishing was wayward on this occasion, having a close range shot cleared off the line on 63 minutes.

Against the run of play & on a counter-attack, Ben Hughes scored what looked like the cliching goal for Wednesday in the 72nd minute. The full-back ghosted in-field to receive a pass on the edge of the box before curling an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

But Alex Morris' young side were seven games unbeaten & didn't give up.

Finney shot straight at at Owls substitue goalkeeper Dan Wallis with ten minutes left on the clock from a presentable opportunity as the Alex continued to create openings.

Just as though it looked like it was going to be one of those days, Reilly popped up with a header in the 93rd minute - rising above his marker from an upteenth corner to power it home.

It looked as though it would be a mere consolation, but the scenes that followed were quite unbelievable.

With time all but up, Crewe won the ball back almost immediately from the restart, played up-field & won themselves yet another corner.

Goalkeeper Richards got the nod to make the advancement & the corner just evaded his outstretched head. But the ball ricocheted back off a number of legs to Richards six yards from goal & he powered a left foot strike into the net.

The small crowd went wild & all ten of his team mates charged over for the classic 'pile-on' to celebrate the most dramatic of late comebacks.

The restart was met by the referees final whistle & Crewe had equalised with the last kick of the game to extend the unbeaten run to eight.

Alex Morris' team face a final encounter of the calendar on Monday 17 December when his side travel to Nottinham Forest.
