U23: Jones & Wintle Set To Feature At Colchester

19 March 2018

Crewe Alexandra pair James Jones and Ryan Wintle are set to ramp-up their comeback from injury this afternoon as the Under 23’s take on Colchester United.

Lewis Reilly is also set to return for the trip to Essex after a few weeks out.

Dave Richards continues to skipper the side as Alex Morris looks to build on last week’s 1-0 victory over Birmingham City.

First Team Manager Dave Artell said: “Ryan Wintle is there, James Jones is there, Lewis Reilly is there after his ankle injury recently.

“We’ll see how they all get on today. We’ll see how, if anyone gets a knock, they react in the next 24 hours, and we’ll assess everyone after the game this afternoon.

“We’ll make plans for all eventualities going into tomorrow night.”

U23 Report: Colchester 0-2 Crewe

19 March 2018

Crewe Alexandra Under 23's recorded an impressive 2-0 victory over Colchester United in Essex in the latest Professional Development League 2 match.

Lewis Reilly late in the first half and a Josh Lundstram penalty with the last kick of the game won it for Alex Morris' side who have now made it back-to-back wins and clean sheets.

There was also another 60 minutes on the clock for both James Jones and Ryan Wintle as they continue to regain match fitness after long-term injuries, with Reilly also getting 75 mins under his belt after an ankle problem.

Crewe dominated the first half, James Jones hitting the post early on after a Reilly pass with Dave Richards on hand to make a good save against the run of play.

The Alex went ahead three minutes shy of the break, Regan Griffiths intercepted a loose Colchester pass and fed Reilly just inside the box for the clinical striker to fire a left-footer off the underside of the crossbar and in.

The U's came out a different side after the break to put some pressure on the Alex, with a solid defensive display restricting them to deep crosses and shots from distance.

That solid display was capped off three minutes into stoppage time when Crewe broke up the pitch from defending a corner with Griffiths feeding Ollie Finney who knocked on to Lundstram who was brought down in the box.

Lundstam picked himself up & slammed the penalty straight down the middle with the keeper diving to his right to make the game safe and cap off a decent performance.

Crewe: Richards, Offord, Wintle (Heath, 60), Lundstram, Adebisi, Lynch, Griffiths, Jones (Lomas, 60), Finney, Hurst, Reilly (C.Johnson)
