Ray Set For U23 Birmingham City Trip Tonight

19 February 2018

Crewe Alexandra defender George Ray looks set to step-up his return to match fitness with an expected 90 minutes in the Under 23's fixture at Birmingham City this evening.

George last played in the Cheshire Senior Cup loss at Nantwich two weeks ago, but U23 postponements have restricted his playing time in his attempted comeback.

Alex Morris' side travel to the Blues (7pm kick-off), looking to return to winning ways after a draw with Sheffield United and defeat to The Dabbers.

Boss Dave Artell said: "George is, touch wood, getting another 90 minutes under his belt tonight.

"There are a couple of others having run-outs, but not too long, because we're obviously mindful of the game on Tuesday night."

U23 Report: Birmingham City 2-0 Crewe

20 February 2018

Alex Morris' Crewe Alexandra Under 23's went down 2-0 at St Andrews Stadium against Birmingham City.

A Blues side on red-hot form had already won two games within a few days, and they made it three within a week thanks to second half goals from Olly McCoy and Corey O'Keeffe.

Lewis Reilly had a chance that was well saved in the first half, with the confident Blues also testing Dave Richards on a few occassions.

But the hosts took the lead just two minutes into the second period, McCoy fortuitously sliding the ball home with his instep after an attempted pass inside deflected off a Crewe man.

The Blues goalkeeper was forced into a fine save on the hour mark to tip away George Ray's looping header, and City wrapped up the game moments later when O'Keeffe curled a direct free-kick into the top corner.

Next up for Alex Morris' Crewe Under 23's is a contest with Bolton Wanderers at Reaseheath on Monday 26 Feb (1pm).

Crewe: Richards, T.Johnson, Offord, Ray, Sass-Davies, Lynch, Lundstram, Walker, Finney, Barlaser, Reilly
