Matchday Guide|Doncaster (A)

9 March 2024

Crewe Alexandra will aim to make it six consecutive away games without defeat when they travel to in-form Doncaster Rovers this afternoon (Saturday, 3pm).

Lee Bell’s side, who start the game fourth in League Two, will want put last weekend’s home defeat to Morecambe behind them.

The Opposition

Rovers sit 20th in Sky Bet League Two but have only lost one of their last seven games.

They have won eight out of their 17 fixtures at Eco-Power Stadium this season.

The Gaffer

Former West Ham youth player Grant McCann played over 500 games throughout his career, including 100 for Peterborough, before starting a career as a coach.

He has been Posh boss twice, took charge of Hull City between 2019-2022, and was appointed manager at Doncaster for a second time at the end of last season.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: “Our away performances have been good. We’ve had to show both sides of our game. Doncaster have been on a good run of form and have a real threat at the top end of the pitch. We must build on our recent away form and bounce back from last Saturday’s disappointment.”

Grant McCann: “Crewe are a good team; well coached and well drilled. They have good players all through the team and it's no surprise where they are. It's a very tough game for us. But it is an opportunity for another three points for us. We have got stronger than last time we played each other."

Head-to-Head

The two sides have met 108 times. Doncaster have won 43 compared to Crewe's 38. The remaining 27 games have been drawn.

In the reverse fixture, Crewe took all three points at Mornflake Stadium with a 3-2 thriller. Connor O’Riordan got a brace for the Alex, including a late winner.

Match Officials

Craig Hicks is the referee for today’s clash. Declan Ford and Danny Guest will accompany him as assistants. Steven Copeland will be the fourth official.

Hicks has handed out 55 yellow cards and four red cards in the 16 games he has taken charge of this season.

Match Reports

Match Report | Doncaster 2 Crewe 0

9 March 2024

  • Alex suffer first away loss in 2024
  • Adebisi and Austerfield go closest
  • Railwaymen slip to fifth

Crewe Alexandra slipped to their first away defeat of 2024 at Doncaster Rovers.

The home side took the points thanks to goals from Hakeeb Adelakun and Tommy Rowe, at Eco-Power Stadium.

Josh Austerfield and Rio Adebisi went closest to getting on the scoresheet for the Alex, but they have slipped to fifth in League Two as a result of a first loss on the road in seven.

Now Lee Bell’s men will look to bounce back when Sutton United visit Mornflake Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Bell made three changes to the side that lost to Morecambe. Tom Booth, Ryan Cooney and Aaron Rowe were recalled, while Harvey Davies, Lewis Billington and Matus Holicek made way.

Doncaster were unchanged, meaning that former Crewe man Billy Waters was amongst their substitutes.

Luke Molyneux brought a routine save from Booth on 12 minutes, while Elliott Nevitt headed a Rio Adebisi cross wide at the other end.

On 17 minutes, the hosts hit the front when Adelakun’s corner sailed over everybody and into the back of the net.

Super wing play by Shilow Tracey teed up Josh Austerfield inside the box but his sidefooter was well blocked by a Rovers defender, as Crewe looked to respond.

Nevitt beat a defender but could only find the gloves of keepeer Tim Lo-Tutala, and Austerfield couldn’t get his shot away when he ran behind the home defence just before the break.

Charlie Kirk fired wide after a Tracey cross was deflected into his path soon after the restart, but on 58 minutes it was 2-0.

Sub Rowe was on hand to tap home from a yard out after the Alex failed to clear the second phase of a corner.

Crewe applied pressure and caused problems in the Rovers box, but they were frustrated every time they came close.

Adebisi was denied by the legs of Lo-Tutala after being teed up by Austerfield, while Maxime Biamou’s header was held by Booth as the hosts looked for a third.

Adebisi headed over from a Lewis Leigh cross in injury time, but The Railwaymen could not get on the scoresheet.
