Matchday Guide|AFC Wimbledon (H)

23 March 2024

Crewe Alexandra will aim to get back to winning ways when they host AFC Wimbledon this afternoon (Saturday, 3pm).

Lee Bell’s men were defeated last weekend but confidence remains high ahead of a clash with another side with promotion ambition.

The Opposition

The Wombles are seventh, just inside the Play-Off places. Three wins from their last five have brought them right back into contention.

The Gaffer

Johnnie Jackson became manager of Wimbledon in May 2022.

The former Tottenham youth player ended his career at Charlton Athletic where he played 255 games, and he also managed the Addicks in two different spells across 2021 and 2022.

Fighting Talk

Lee Bell: “Everyone is full of confidence and looking forward to the game. They have been terrific this season and have been in and around it, similar to us. They are an energetic team, aggressive and have good players.

Johnnie Jackson: “We’re at the stage in the season when I’m not going to leave us short at all. We’ll need all hands-on deck – we will need everyone for this final push. “

Head-to-Head

The teams have met nine times in their history. The Railwaymen have won three times, with five matches ending in a draw.

The reverse fixture at the Cherry Red Records Stadium this season saw a late comeback from the Alex earn a draw, thanks to late goals from Joel Tabiner and Elliot Nevitt.

Match Officials

Darren Drysdale is the referee for this afternoon’s clash, and Karl Buckley and Conor Brown will be his assistants. Lee Freeman will be the fourth official.

Match Report | Crewe 1 AFC Wimbledon 1

23 March 2024

  • Railwaymen held at home
  • Adebisi hits fourth of season
  • Alex stay fifth in table

Crewe Alexandra were forced to settle for a share of the spoils when AFC Wimbledon came to town.

John-Kymani Gordon gave the visitors an early lead but Rio Adebisi’s fourth of the season quickly cancelled it out.

The Railwaymen bossed possession and looked more likely to win it, but they could not find a way through.

As a result, Crewe stay fifth in League Two as they prepare to visit eighth-placed Gillingham on Good Friday.

Lee Bell made two changes to the side that lost at MK Dons, with Aaron Rowe and Ryan Cooney dropping to the bench.

Lewis Leigh came into midfield to make his full debut for the club, and Charlie Kirk was restored to attack, as the Alex reverted to 4-3-3.

Christopher Long was back on the bench after missing more than six weeks with a thigh injury.

Wimbledon, who were without striker Omar Bugiel as he linked up with Lebanon for international duty, hit the front on two minutes.

Jack Currie was allowed to get down the Dons left and he squared for Gordon to guide home.

Ed Turns made two super blocks to stop the visitors extending their lead and, on 13 minutes, it was 1-1.

Leigh took a short free kick to Adebisi who arrowed a brilliant strike across keeper Alex Bass and into the top corner.

After a shaky start, Crewe responded well and got themselves on top, but neither keeper was troubled again in the first half.

Shilow Tracey bundled his way through on goal in the 37th minute but when he poked it square, nobody could apply the finishing touch.

The second half was a similarly tight and fiercely contested affair.

Both sides gave everything but quality in the final third was lacking.

Leigh saw a direct free-kick held by Bass, and the midfielder made a super block as Wimbledon attacked the other end of the pitch.

On 75 minutes a whipped corner was flicked goalwards by Mickey Demetriou but Conor Thomas could only nod it over the bar.

Long tried his luck from distance in injury time but the sides could not be separated.
