Crewe Alexandra will aim to build on their dramatic 4-3 win over Salford when they visit Stevenage on Tuesday (7:45pm).

Lee Bell’s seven-unbeaten side will be on a high following the impressive victory over promotion-chasers Salford, but will be under no illusions about the size of the task that awaits them at Lamex Stadium.

The Opposition

Stevenage are having an impressive this season, and sit third in the table on 63 points with a game in hand on fellow promotion-chasers Northampton Town, who sit fourth.

Boro have had a mixed run in their last five games, only winning twice in the last month, though were 3-1 victors on Saturday against Walsall, with Josh March (x2) and Luke Norris scoring the decisive goals.

The Gaffer

Steve Evans took the reins in March 2022, guiding the club to EFL safety last season. This term they have pulled off a huge shock in the FA Cup by knocking out Premier League side Aston Villa in the third round.

Evans’s career high came between 2012 and 2014, where he took Rotherham United from League Two to the Championship in successive seasons. His EFL pedigree is hard to match.

Team News

Rod McDonald will serve his second of a three-match ban. Christopher Long and Zac Williams remain sidelined for the Alex.

Taye Ashby-Hammond and Elliot List remain out for Boro for the fixture, although there may be a chance Terence Vancooten features in the squad.

Head-to-Head

The sides share an equal head-to-head record, winning six of the 15 ties apiece. Three clashes have ended in draws.

Earlier this season, Stevenage emerged as 2-1 winners at Mornflake Stadium courtesy of a brace from Jamie Reid.

Officials

Alan Young has been appointed referee for Tuesday’s encounter, having last officiated the Alex in January 2021, a 4-1 defeat away to Gillingham in League One.

He will be assisted by Paul Lister-Flynn and Marc Wilson, with Sam Purkiss appointed as fourth official.

Seven-match unbeaten run comes to an end
Alex fail to score for first time in three

Crewe Alexandra’s seven-match unbeaten run came to an end when they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Stevenage.

Sub Jamie Reid, who got both goals in Boro’s victory at Mornflake Stadium earlier this season, struck on 79 minutes to seal the three points.

Crewe put up a strong battle but struggled to work home keeper Jon McCracken, as the hosts moved up to second in the table.

Now The Railwaymen will look to start another positive run when they visit Northampton Town on Saturday (3pm).

Lee Bell named a side unchanged from the one that beat Salford in dramatic fashion on Friday night.

Neither keeper had much to do in a goalless first half. James Beadle bravely punched two early crosses away, but was otherwise well-protected despite Stevenage enjoying the vast majority of territory.

Crewe had very little play in the home side’s half. Rio Adebisi headed over from a free-kick in the best half-chance of the first 45.

The Alex had to survive some early pressure from the hosts in the opening stages of the second half, as Dan Sweeney headed just off target.

A swift Crewe break saw a Dan Agyei effort blocked by the recovering Jake Taylor, but Beadle had to make a good stop at his near post to deny Luke Norris when Stevenage counter-attacked quickly.

On 66 minutes Beadle athletically tipped a Josh March strike over the bar, as the hosts moved into double figures with their corner-count.

On 79 minutes, with Tariq Uwakwe lying injured on the floor, sub Reid drilled the opener from outside the area.

Sub Michael Bostwick hit the bar from the close range, and Beadle made a point-blank save as Stevenage tried to force in the rebound, in the closing stages.

Sweeney headed into Beadle’s arms from yet another corner in the six minutes of stoppage time, but the hosts saw it out for a narrow win.
